For hourly workers, the calculation is especially tricky because overtime, shift differentials, and variable schedules make each pay period different. What Counts as Annual Income (and What Does Not)

Step-by-Step: Hourly Wage to Annual Income with Overtime

Step 1: Calculate base annual income. Multiply your hourly rate by your standard weekly hours, then by 52 weeks. For $25/hr at 40 hours/week: $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000. This is your base gross annual income before overtime.

Step 2: Add regular overtime. If you typically work a consistent amount of overtime each week, calculate the annual overtime pay separately. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5x your base rate (federal FLSA standard). For 5 hours of weekly overtime at $25/hr: $25 × 1.5 × 5 hours × 52 weeks = $9,750. Step 3: Add shift differentials. If you work evening or night shifts with a premium, calculate the differential separately. A $3/hr night differential for 20 hours per week: $3 × 20 × 52 = $3,120 annual differential. If overtime hours also fall during the differential shift, the overtime rate is calculated on the blended regular rate (base + differential). At $25 base + $3 differential = $28 regular rate, overtime on differential hours is $28 × 1.5 = $42/hr.

Step 4: Add recurring bonuses and commissions. Annual performance bonuses, quarterly production bonuses, and regular commission payments are part of gross annual income. How Overtime Changes the Math (Worked Example)

Consider a maintenance mechanic earning $32/hr base, working a standard 40-hour week with 8 hours of overtime per week (common in manufacturing plants running 6-day schedules). The base annual income is $32 × 40 × 52 = $66,560. The overtime component is $32 × 1.5 × 8 × 52 = $19,968. Total gross annual income: $86,528.

That overtime adds $19,968 per year, or 30% above the base income. For this worker, the simple "multiply hourly by 2,080" shortcut ($32 × 2,080 = $66,560) understates actual annual income by nearly $20,000. If this worker applies for a mortgage using only the base calculation, they are leaving significant qualifying income on the table.

Now add a $2/hr evening shift differential for 24 of the 48 weekly hours (the worker does 4 evening shifts of 12 hours, with 8 hours at overtime rate). The shift differential adds $2 × 24 × 52 = $2,496/year. But it also affects the overtime rate: for hours where the differential applies during overtime, the regular rate includes the differential. If 4 of the 8 weekly OT hours fall during the evening shift, those 4 hours should be calculated at ($32 + $2) × 1.5 = $51/hr instead of $48/hr, adding an extra $3/hr × 4 hours × 52 weeks = $624/year.
