Free Brick / Block / Paver Calculator
Calculate exact brick, block, or paver quantities with mortar, sand, base material, and waste factors for any project
Professional brick calculator and paver calculator for masons, hardscapers, and DIY builders. Select from 6 application types (wall, patio, driveway, walkway, fire pit, retaining wall) and 10 material options including standard brick, modular brick, concrete paver, natural stone, and CMU block. Choose from 7 laying patterns (running bond, herringbone, basketweave, stack bond, and more) with accurate waste factors for each pattern. Calculates mortar volume, joint sand, base aggregate, and edge restraint quantities with cost estimates based on material prices.

-
Select Application Type
Choose the project type: wall, patio, driveway, walkway, fire pit, or retaining wall. Each application sets appropriate defaults for base depth, joint width, and structural requirements.
-
Enter Dimensions
Input the project area in length and width for flat work, or length and height for walls. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and calculate each section separately. The calculator accepts square feet or individual dimensions.
-
Choose Material and Size
Select from standard brick (3-5/8 x 2-1/4 x 8 in), modular brick, king size, concrete paver (various sizes), natural stone, or CMU block. Custom unit dimensions can be entered for specialty products.
-
Select Laying Pattern
Choose running bond, herringbone 90, herringbone 45, basketweave, stack bond, pinwheel, or random. Each pattern has a specific waste factor that is added to the base quantity. Herringbone 45 has the highest waste but provides the strongest interlock for driveways.
-
Review Quantities
The calculator shows total units needed (including waste), mortar bags or joint sand volume, base aggregate in tons, edge restraint in linear feet, and any polymeric sand needed for paver joints. All quantities include the pattern-specific waste factor.
-
Estimate Costs
Enter unit prices for materials or use default regional averages. The cost summary breaks down material costs by category: units, mortar/sand, base, edge restraint, and accessories. Add labor cost per square foot for a complete project estimate.
Built For
- Masons estimating brick quantities and mortar for residential and commercial wall projects
- Hardscape contractors calculating paver quantities for patio and driveway installations
- Homeowners planning DIY paver walkway or patio projects with accurate material lists
- Landscape architects specifying material quantities for hardscape bid packages
- Building material suppliers verifying customer order quantities before delivery
Assumptions
- Unit dimensions match standard ASTM sizes for the selected material type.
- Mortar joint width is uniform throughout the project area.
- Waste factors reflect typical field conditions for each laying pattern.
- Base material compaction achieves 95% Standard Proctor density.
Limitations
- Does not perform structural analysis for retaining walls or load-bearing masonry.
- Irregular shapes must be broken into rectangular sections for accurate quantity takeoffs.
- Cost estimates use regional averages and may not reflect local material pricing.
