How It Works

    Enter door and window counts. Standard deductions apply (21 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window), or enter custom sizes for large openings like sliding glass doors.

    Choose between 4x8 and 4x12 sheets. The calculator counts how many sheets each wall and the ceiling require, rounding up per surface so you do not end up short.

  4. Choose Drywall Thickness

    Pick 1/2" for standard walls, 5/8" for ceilings and fire-rated assemblies, or 1/4" for curved surfaces. Thickness affects screw spacing recommendations.

  5. Review the Full Material List

    See total sheets, rolls of tape, pounds of joint compound (all-purpose or setting type), screws, and corner bead. Joint compound is calculated from actual joint linear footage, not a rough percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

With 8-foot ceilings and one door, a 12x12 room requires about 14 sheets of 4x8 drywall for the walls and 4-5 sheets for the ceiling. The exact count depends on how you orient the sheets (horizontal vs vertical on walls) and how many windows are present. Horizontal hanging reduces visible joints.
Plan on roughly 0.05-0.07 gallons of premixed all-purpose compound per square foot of drywall. For a typical 12x12 room (about 460 sq ft of drywall), that is about one 4.5-gallon bucket. Three coats on every joint and screw head is standard: tape coat, fill coat, and skim coat.
On walls, space screws every 16 inches along each stud for 1/2" drywall. On ceilings, tighten to every 12 inches to prevent sag. Use 1-1/4" screws for 1/2" drywall and 1-5/8" screws for 5/8" drywall. Each screw should dimple the paper slightly without breaking through it.
Hang horizontally on walls with 8-foot or 9-foot ceilings. This puts the factory tapered edges at a comfortable working height (about 4 feet up), creates fewer total joints, and bridges more studs for a stronger connection. Vertical hanging makes sense only for ceilings above 9 feet or very narrow walls.
One 500-foot roll of paper tape covers approximately 450-500 sq ft of drywall. For a typical bedroom (about 450 sq ft), one roll is usually enough. Buy mesh tape only if you are using setting-type compound, since mesh tape with premixed mud is prone to cracking along butt joints.
1/2" drywall is standard for walls with studs at 16" on center. 5/8" drywall is required by most building codes on ceilings to prevent sag between joists, and it provides a 1-hour fire rating (Type X) when required between a garage and living space. The weight difference is about 15 lbs per sheet.
Yes. Every outside corner needs corner bead for a straight, durable edge. Paper-faced corner bead is easier to finish and less prone to denting than metal bead. Measure each outside corner's height and buy bead in 8-foot or 10-foot lengths. Inside corners use paper tape folded along the center crease.
