Fertilizer Blend & Cost-Per-Nutrient Calculator

Compare products by actual cost per pound of N, P₂O₅, and K₂O delivered

Build a custom fertilizer blend from common products (urea, UAN, DAP, MAP, MOP, AMS) or add your own. Enter target nutrient rates and see the cheapest blend, cost per pound of each nutrient, excess nutrient analysis, and application efficiency adjustments for broadcast vs. banded vs. injected placement.

Pro Tip: Banded phosphorus is 85% efficient vs. 50% for broadcast. That means you can apply 40% less P and get the same crop uptake - a huge cost savings on DAP/MAP.

Fertilizer Blend & Cost Calculator

How It Works

  1. Set Nutrient Targets

Enter your target application rates for N, P₂O₅, K₂O, and optionally S in pounds per acre. Select your application method for efficiency adjustments.

  2. Configure Products

Use the default product library or add custom products with their analysis (N-P-K-S percentages) and price per ton. Toggle products on/off to test different blend options.

  3. Review the Blend

See pounds per acre of each product, cost per acre, cost per pound of nutrient, and excess nutrient analysis. The solver finds the cheapest blend that meets your targets.

Built For

  • Farmers comparing fertilizer quotes from dealers
  • Agronomists optimizing nutrient plans for clients
  • Farm managers budgeting input costs per acre

Frequently Asked Questions

Anhydrous ammonia (82-0-0) is typically the cheapest source of N per pound, but it requires specialized application equipment. Among dry products, urea (46-0-0) is usually cheapest per pound of N. UAN solutions (28-0-0 or 32-0-0) cost more per pound of N but offer easier handling. This calculator shows you the true cost comparison with your current prices.
Not all applied fertilizer reaches the crop. Nitrogen efficiency ranges from 50% (surface broadcast) to 90% (injected). Phosphorus is particularly affected: broadcast P is only 50% efficient vs. 85% for banded. The calculator adjusts required application rates based on your selected method, so you see the true delivered nutrient cost.
Because fertilizer products contain fixed nutrient ratios. If you need 150 lb N and 40 lb P, applying enough DAP (18-46-0) to meet your P target also delivers 15.6 lb of N. The solver prioritizes the most constrained nutrient first, then fills remaining needs. Excess analysis shows any over-application.
Disclaimer: Fertilizer blend calculations are estimates based on product analyses and prices you provide. Actual nutrient availability depends on soil conditions, weather, and application method. Consult your agronomist for site-specific recommendations.
