Transformer protection is one of the most frequently miscalculated NEC requirements. The rules differ based on transformer voltage class, impedance, whether primary or secondary protection is provided, and whether fuses or circuit breakers are used. This calculator applies the correct multipliers and next-standard-size rules automatically.

Pro Tip: NEC 450.3(B) allows the primary OCPD to be sized up to 125% of primary FLA for transformers 1000V and below when using fuses, or 125% when using circuit breakers. If 125% does not correspond to a standard rating, you can go to the next standard size. But this next-size-up rule does NOT apply to the secondary. Secondary OCPD must not exceed 125% for fuses or 125% for breakers, period. This is the most common mistake on plan reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, NEC 450.3(B) permits primary-only protection at 125% of primary FLA (next standard size up if 125% does not correspond to a standard rating). The secondary conductors must then be protected by other means (e.g., panelboard main breaker). This is the most common arrangement for small dry-type transformers.
NEC 450.3(B) limits secondary protection to 125% of secondary FLA with no next-standard-size allowance on the secondary side. This ensures the secondary device protects the transformer winding from sustained overloads. The next-standard-size-up rule applies only to the primary.
When secondary protection is provided, the primary OCPD can be sized up to 250% of primary FLA (fuse) or 300% (breaker), and the secondary OCPD at 125% of secondary FLA. The 167% rule applies to primary-only protection of transformers with impedance over 6%. It is not commonly encountered in standard commercial installations.
Control transformers (Class 2, signaling) under 1000VA are governed by NEC 725 or other articles, not 450.3. Transformers rated over 1000VA in industrial control circuits follow NEC 450.3 unless specifically exempted by another article.
The voltage and current calculations account for the winding configuration automatically. The kVA is the same on both sides (minus losses). Primary amps use the primary voltage; secondary amps use the secondary voltage. For 480V delta to 208Y/120V, secondary FLA is based on 208V line-to-line for three-phase loads.
